That was then...

A special kind of redoo today. I tried to get this done for the weekend, but couldn't. So here we have the original Mike Zeck cover, my 7th grade drawing, and my re-try at it now.

Someone asked me to put up a drawing from a time "when I was not so good", out of curiosity. While I've done plenty of really bad drawings, I don't know if I kept all of them. But I try to hold onto this one....

This is what I consider to be my first real drawing. It isn't the first I've ever done, of course, but this was like that awakening moment when I realized I could actually make a pencil form shapes correctly. This is the first I remember trying to draw something and being surprised that it came out somewhere even close.

This drawing is from when I was in 7th grade. I had a few friends who would draw and make little cartoons and I wanted to try it. I had no idea of what I was doing, so, probably like many others, I decided to try and copy something. Spiderman was, at the time (prob'ly still is), my favorite character so I tried this cover out. As some of you might recognize, it is from the series Kraven's Last Hunt, where Kraven "kills" Spiderman. I've never read the whole thing as I never collected all the issues. In know there is a collected book, but haven't gotten 'round to it yet. Anyway... Penciled by Mike Zeck, its an iconic image of Spiderman rising from the grave as he was only tranquilized and buried.

So about 20 years later, I've redone what was my first intended drawing. Maybe in another 20, I'll try it again.
